What's the best fill for a freestyle footbag?
Most freestyle players prefer stainless steel fill for its weight and responsiveness. 2mm beads are the standard size for footbag fill. 1.6mm has a smoother feel but it's more advanced — your stitching and templates need to be dialed in or it'll leak. Some stitchers swear by stainless disks for a different feel. Rubber crumb or plastic pellets are typically added after the stainless to dial in the fill percentage and texture you're looking for.
What fabric is best for making footbags?
Ultrasuede is the gold standard for freestyle footbags — it's grippy, durable, and easy to stitch. Most pro stitchers use Ultrasuede Light (LT), Ultrasuede LX, or Ultrasuede Soft. Silky Sensuede is a popular alternative with a different feel. We also carry a Korean faux suede that's excellent for footbags.
Can I make my own footbag?
Yes! Our stitching kits are a great way to get started. The NYFA-14 kit has 14 panels, and our mystery 32-panel kits include panels in a random Ultrasuede material plus fill. We have instructional videos to walk you through the whole process. Our go-to thread is Johnson & Johnson 2733 Reach Mint Floss, and glover's needles are great for punching through fabric.
Why are handmade footbags better than store-bought ones?
Most mass-produced footbags use cheap vinyl or canvas with generic fill — they lose their shape fast, split at the seams, and feel dead on your foot. Handmade footbags use premium materials like Ultrasuede with precision-cut panels and custom fill blends tuned for weight, responsiveness, and feel. The stitching is tighter and more durable, the shape stays rounder, and the bag plays consistently over hundreds of sessions. It's the difference between kicking a beanbag and playing with a real instrument.
How do I wash my footbag?
Hand wash with warm water and a mild hand soap. Gently squeeze and roll the bag between your hands — don't scrub the fabric. Rinse until the water runs clear, squeeze out the excess (don't wring it), pat dry with a paper towel, then reshape and leave it on the counter overnight to air dry. Avoid machine washing, hot water, and direct heat like dryers or radiators. Don't kick a wet footbag — wet seams stretch and weaken. Regular washing also extends the life of your bag — embedded dirt and grit act like sandpaper against the fabric fibers every time you play, gradually wearing them down.
What's the difference between a footbag and a hacky sack?
Hacky Sack is a brand name that became generic — like Kleenex for tissues. Footbag is the official name for the sport and the ball. A quality handmade footbag is a completely different experience from the mass-produced sand-filled bags most people have tried.
